“Hip-Pop”

Here’s the rap-poem which I entered into my county Literary Fair last year and won first place in the county. It’s a reflection on today’s hip hop.

I used to live in a battlefield of words

Where young minds would rush in like herds

Grabbing their swords, they slashed their pain

Ink spilled, on the field, leaving bloodstains

But this was a war with no true sides

Just a fight, in sport, where the mind collides

And the generals stood together for a cause

To empower warriors to fight beyond flaws

Flaws of the self, of the soul, of society

Seeking an elevation of the mind in entirety

Then, hear this rhyme, the new armies arrived

Contained, for a time, by the armed and alive

The loose-leaf shields and wielded rhymes

But the enemies sealed it with the war crimes

Didn’t attack our bodies, but our emotion-incline

Said bye, bye, bye to the depth of our mind

Brainwashing; their war cries droned on

Warriors dropped their swords, and moaned their songs

Melodious musical notes, through the air, float

And words go no deeper than our throats

Our battle became battle, against the corporations

An eMpTy Vison lost to pop sensations

But sorry for noticing, seeing these back streets

At least, they had mercy, it was a slow defeat

So I guess I should just lean back and relax

Cuz we got the best of both worlds in these tracks

Just chilling backstage with some p*ssycats and the boys

Man, this is fun, maybe I ought to tune my voice

But wait, when did this war become about fun?

When did we become industrial pawns with guns?

What happened to our swords? Our honor, our code

Our pens, our books, our ink which flowed

Our struggle and fight, our value of speech

Our fighting, our influence, our reach

Have we become the very enemies we fought?

Have we lowered our shields and have we been bought?

With the infection of hip, and the obsession of pop,

Are we seeking purpose or to be at the top?

Does our word die today? Will our battling stop?

A moment of silence for our loss: hip hop
